Every first Sunday of the month, the Niantic American Legion Auxiliary holds a breakfast buffet at the Niantic Legion Hall. Open to the public as a fund raiser, the Auxiliary has been graced many times by some impressive guests. This past Sunday was no exception when they hosted the National President of the American Legion Auxiliary for breakfast. The American Legion Auxiliary with approximately 900,000 members supports veterans, their families, and community. Rita Navarreté, the 2009-2010 National Presidents coming from New Mexico, where she is a native, is the first Hispanic President in the history of the Auxiliary. The American Legion Auxiliary which was chartered in November of 1919 will celebrate its 90th birthday next week. Mrs. Navarreté visited this weekend in a brief 3 day stay touring Connecticut and visiting some of Connecticut’s Auxiliary programs. Mrs. Navarreté took time from her schedule to speak during breakfast providing words of encouragement to the members and the community it serves, talking about working together as a family to reach common goals, supporting patriotism and veterans. She and the National Girls State Committee Chairman, Janet Jefford spoke with two of Niantic’s Auxiliary juniors Jessica and Stacy Yuhas about the importance of youth mentorship in community service and upcoming Girls State and scholarship opportunities. The National Auxiliary President travels a great deal of the year she is president visiting each state in the US and country that has an American Legion Auxiliary Unit. Tim Yuhas, Commander of the Niantic Turner-Tinker Post 128 said, “I am extremely proud of our Legion Family in Niantic and the work they do. So it was an honor to have the National Auxiliary President visit and show her what a great and hard working team we have.” The President was accompanied by several State and National Officers as well as the Connecticut Department President.
