Mitchell College Family Halloween Festival on October 24
to Benefit Local Food Pantry
NEW LONDON, CONN – September 29, 2009 – Mitchell College’s Behavioral Science Club is hosting its Third Annual Family Halloween Festival on Saturday, October 24, from 10 am to 4pm on the College Green.
The event features family style fun with face painting, holiday themed arts and crafts, games and storytelling by a host of fanciful witches and goblins. Halloween Costume Parades are also scheduled throughout the day, so participants are encouraged to wear their holiday best.
This year the Family Halloween Festival coincides with the International Day of Climate Action. Visitors to campus are invited to take part in a global movement to spread the word about climate change by arranging pumpkins in the numbers 3- 5- 0 and being present for a photo opportunity. Don’t know the importance of 350? Be sure to stop by the action organized by students in the Societal Impacts of Global Climate Change course, and find out!
Helium balloons, baked goods, hot dogs, popcorn, beverages and candied apples will also be available for purchase.
The event is free and open to the public. A donation of one non-perishable canned food item is requested as admission, with all donations going to support the Gemma Moran United Way/Labor Food Pantry.
The event was originally created in 1994 by Don Helms, professor of Behavioral Sciences, as a way to bring local families to the Mitchell College campus.
“Last year we had over 450 members of the local community in attendance and several members of the college community (faculty, staff, and students) volunteered time, energy and creative talent,” said Jennifer Mauro, faculty advisor of the Behavioral Science Club. “The Behavioral Science Club takes pride in this event, especially because it provides a great opportunity for families within the
Mitchell College community and greater community to connect with one another.”
