New London Businesses to Launch "Friday Nights in the District"

Downtown businesses collaborate to introduce new community event, Oct. 30.

New London, Conn. (Oct. 16, 2009) -- Over 15 downtown New London businesses have joined together to launch Friday Nights in the District, a new weekly community event geared towards people of all ages.

Friday Nights in the District will run every Friday from Oct. 30 to Dec. 18 and will feature a variety of hands-on activities, music, talks and demonstrations held at different locations throughout New London. All participating businesses will extend their hours until 8 p.m. in an effort to allow more people time to experience all that downtown New London, also known as "The District," has to offer.

Participating businesses include: ALVA Gallery; Aticc Boutique; Arciolinda; Pinc at Arciolinda; Cadmarie Salon & Spa; Fiddleheads Natural Foods Cooperative; Flavours of Life; Greenlight Boutique; The Muse; Studio 33 Art & Frame Gallery; Takeout Gallery & Boutique; Custom House Maritime Museum; Golden Street Gallery; Whaling City Tattoo Museum; and Daniel?s Dairy Downtown.

Activities currently scheduled for Oct. 30 launch include:

  • An Artist Stance at Aticc Boutique: Come meet featured artist of the month, Kevin Gallagher, and listen and share opinions on living and surviving as an artist.
    • Fortune Telling at Arciolinda: Have your fortune told at Arciolinda. $5 donation to Jennings Elementary School.
    • Carmel apple making at Fiddleheads Natural Food Cooperative.
    • Get Your Henna On at Flavours of Life: $5 henna tattoos by Wandering Falcon Designs.
    • Ghost stories by the New London Historical Society: Come hear two authentic tales of terror forever linked to downtown New London history.
    • Music at The Muse: Theodore Geisel's Flying Laboratory
    • Free admission at the Custom House Maritime Museum: Free admission from 6-8 p.m.
    • Pumpkin carving at Golden Street Gallery: Bring your own pumpkin or purchase one at the Gallery to paint and display. Gift certificate will be given to the creator of the most creative, unique pumpkin.
    • Free hot chocolate at Daniel's Dairy Downtown.
    • Pastel drawing demonstration at Studio 33: Local artist Deborah Curtis will demonstrate pastel drawing from 6-7 p.m.

All activities are from 6-8 p.m. unless otherwise noted. List subject to change.
